Unraveling the History of Búzios

Before European settlers arrived, Búzios was inhabited by the Tamoios and Goytacazes Indians, who sustained themselves through hunting, farming, and fishing. In 1501, Amerigo Vespucci explored the peninsula, and by 1532, the Portuguese had colonized it, employing the Indians as laborers.

In 1555, the French established a settlement in Búzios, complete with a fort, and formed an alliance with the Indians to resist Portuguese rule. During the seventeenth century, the English and Dutch also arrived in the region, engaging in trade involving Brazilian timber, alongside the French.

Between 1700 and 1767, whaling became a prominent industry in the area. From 1750 to 1870, Búzios evolved into a permanent Portuguese settlement, with agricultural activities conducted using African slaves.

In 1964, French actress Brigitte Bardot visited the peninsula, sparking a tourism boom. Following a popular vote, Búzios gained independence from Cabo Frio in 1995, solidifying its status as a distinct municipality. Since then, tourism in Búzios has flourished, drawing visitors from all corners of the globe.
