Natal: City of the Sun

Natal is located in the northeast of Brazil, on the Atlantic Ocean. Natal is Portuguese for Christmas. The name of the city is related to its foundation at Christmas in 1599. Due to the many hours of sunshine, this city is also sometimes called the ‘City of the Sun.’ Natal is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The city center consists of narrow alleys and sandy paths leading to the sea. Natal merges into the fishing village of Ponta Negra. In Natal, you will find many buildings from colonial times, including the Dos Reis Magos Fort and the Centro de Turismo. Beautiful tropical beaches with a wide range of hotels, restaurants, and bars are its main attractions. Ponta Negra is the most popular bay. Enjoyment is guaranteed! The former prison houses bars and shops, with the old prison cells converted into small tourist shops. Most hotels are located along the Via Costeira. This coastal strip runs from Natal to Ponta Negra.
