Fernando de Noronha: A Paradise Archipelago in the Atlantic

Fernando de Noronha enchants as a cluster of captivating islets scattered across the vast Atlantic, approximately 350 kilometers from the Brazilian coastline. The largest island spans a modest 18 square kilometers and hosts a mere 3,000 residents. Meanwhile, the other twenty islets remain pristine and uninhabited, awaiting the curious explorer’s discovery.

Unearthing Centuries of Exploration

The question of who initially set foot on these mystical isles remains a captivating debate. While local accounts attribute the Portuguese as the first arrivals in the early 16th century, the Spanish assert that their explorer, Juan de la Cosa, laid eyes on the archipelago first. Nevertheless, history casts its own light on this enigma. In 1504, Spanish King Dom Manoel bestowed the islands upon Portuguese aristocrat Fernão de Noronha, providing the archipelago with its name. The islands swiftly witnessed an influx of foreign visitors, including the British, French, and Spanish, each leaving their cultural imprint.

Echoes of History and Layers of Culture

In 1635, the largest island briefly fell under Dutch control, governed by the West India Company. Nearly two decades later, however, the Portuguese regained their cherished territory, marking the onset of a period of political stability in the archipelago. In 1737, the Portuguese constructed strategically positioned forts on the largest island. Today, these fortress remnants stand as silent witnesses to an era defined by struggle and domination.
